Role of Pilex Tablets and Ointment in the Treatment of Piles and Fissures

INTRODUCTION
Piles or haemorrhoids are one of the very common conditions encountered in day-to-day surgical practice. Bleeding, which can be alarming sometimes, pain and discomfort are the usual features which compel the patient to seek relief. Though various types of treatment have been suggested over the passage of many centuries, surgical operation has been the mainstay of treatment. It is a natural tendency for everybody to avoid surgery (in any condition) if there is an effective conservative therapy which can cure or produce reasonably long periods of remission. This is more so in the case of piles, for even in experienced hands, results are not always uniformly gratifying. This trial of Pilex tablets and Pilex ointment deals with such a conservative treatment offered by The Himalaya Drug Co.
SUMMARY
A clinical trial was conducted by treating 82 cases of piles of all degrees and 26 cases of fissure-in-ano with Pilex tablets and ointment. A feeling of subjective improvement within a week of initiation of treatment is seen in almost all the patients. An objective improvement has been found in all cases of fissures and in the majority of cases of piles. So, in early cases of piles and fissure-in-ano Pilex tablets and Pilex ointment constitute a good alternative to surgery. Even in late cases, when surgery is contraindicated, or is to be postponed, this conservative regimen can provide adequate remission for a relatively longer period.
